Bates Mill Bedspreads are alive and well in Lewiston, Maine. Thought to be once extinct, People from across the country are finding the beloved high quality matelasse bedpreads and terry bedding that are woven by craftsmen and women on behalf of Maine Heritage Weavers customers right here in the Good Ole USA.
During the early part of the decade of the 1850's workers completed the first of the several Bates Mill buildings in Lewiston, Maine. Constructed along the Androscoggin River to the West and a series of canals to the East that supplied power to the mills as water cascaded through turbines back to the river, thousands of Maine craftsmen and women worked around the clock to provide the now famous lines of Bates Bedspreads to customers from all over the World.
Bates Mill is no longer having closed its doors several years ago. However Maine Heritage Weavers, Inc., has been in business for five years. Staffed by former Bates employees and conducting business out of one of the former Bates Mills, Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures even higher quality bedspreads on looms similar to those used for nearly a century and a half by Bates Manufacturing Company.
These high quality matelasse bedspreads and terry cotton bedspreads are produced from the highest quality yarn available on the now famous Jacquard looms. Styles and colors vary depending on the taste of the customer. Bedspreads with historical significance, or those designed for specific seasons, customers, or locations such as the "Tuscany", or the "Clamshell", are available in all sizes.
Employees of Maine Heritage Weavers look forward to providing customers with its product line. They affectionately describe their bedspreads as "loomed to be heirloomed". Just ask your grandmother, she'll recognize the Bates bedspreads.
