Jacquard Loomed coverlets and bedspreads are still being woven in former Bates Mill Buildings in Lewiston, Maine.

The Jacquard Loom was invented by Joseph M. Jacquard in 1804.   The Jacquard loom automatically controlls the warp and weft threads on a loom by recording patterns of holes in a string of cards.  Warp is the lengthwise threads as the cloth is woven, and weft is the crosswise threads as woven.

Maine Heritage Weavers manufactures woven [tag]matelasse[/tag] bedspreads, blankets, throws and coverlets on [tag]Jacquard looms[/tag].  These looms are similar to those used by Bates Fabrics, which was famous for the quality of their bedspreads.

Former Bates employees who continue the tradition of weaving America's favorite bedspreads as taught to them by their parents and grandparents, are now the first generation of weavers at Maine Heritage Weavers. The products woven at Maine Heritage Weavers are 100 percent cotton and will not fade.

Bates style bedspreads are woven on Jacquard Looms.

Jacquard Looms are the type of loom that has an endless belt of cards, punched with holes that are arranged to produce a patterned weave.  Invented in the 18th century by Frenchman J. M. Jacquard, this type of loom produces a very high quality matelesse and/or terry bedspread, throws, coverlets, and shams.

The Jacquard looms revolutionized the weaving industry and became a very important part of companies like Bates Fabrics, known around the world for its matelesse and terry bedspreads.  Jacquard looms are the primary equipment being used by [tag]Maine Heritage Weavers[/tag] producing Bates types of [tag]matelesse[/tag] and terry products.  Watching the Jacquard loom work is fascinating to say the least and takes highly skilled craftsmen and women to operate.
